Did You Know That There are Different Types of Pain?

Did you know that the body processes these in different ways? Therefore, it is important to properly define which type of pain you are experiencing. By pinpointing the type of pain, it allows your therapist to more effectively select the type of treatment, and get you on the road to managing and/or overcoming your pain faster.

There are four major types of pain which can be present individually, or can be present at the same time which can cause a missed pain pattern. With several types of pain there are various treatment options to suit the intricacies of each type.

The Four Major Types Of Pain are:

  • Nociceptive Pain: mechanical or physical damage to various parts of the body, including skin, muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons. Typically the result of tissue injury caused by the body being harmed. Common types of this pain is bruising, overuse of or joint damage such as arthritis or sprains

  • Inflammatory Pain: An abnormal inflammation caused by an inappropriate response by the bodies immune system. Conditions in this category include jarring a joint, bruising, poor blood circulation, overloading joints and arthritis

  • Neuropathic Pain: Damage to the body's neurological system. An infection or injury commonly causes this type of pain. It leads to messages of pain being sent via the CNS (Central Nervous System) to the brain. Often referred to as "shooting pain" or 'numb feeling" pain caused by nerve irritation. This includes conditions such as Fibromyalgia, stress on the body, postural issues.

  • Functional Pain: Pain without obvious origin, but can cause pain. Overuse from exercise or work, Postural issues, Repetitive Strain.

I hope this helps you understand a little more about the pain responses in the body.
